Beginner's Guide To Hockey Equipment

For those new to the sport, places like Canadian Tire sell introductory packages with all of the equipment needed except for skates and a stick. Additionally, the WVMHA tries to do a gear swap near the beginning of the season and the local thrift store often has items too. If you have questions about gear, please contact the Equipment Manager at equipment.wvmha@gmail.com.

The following highlights key equipment needed to keep your child safe and fully engaged in the game:

  • Helmet with full face mask (CSA approved) - Certified hockey helmet protects your child's head from potential impacts and falls on the ice.
  • Skates - Proper-fitting hockey skates provide stability and mobility. Look for skates that offer ankle support and are comfortable for your child to wear.
  • Shoulder Pads, Elbow Pads, and Shin Guards - These protective gear pieces shield your child's upper and lower body from impacts and collisions.
  • Gloves - Hockey gloves provide grip on the stick and protects hands from sticks, pucks, skates, and the cold.
  • Hockey Pants - Padded pants offer additional protection for the hips and thighs. They are designed to minimize injuries from falls and collisions.
  • Practice Jersey and Socks - Practice jersey and socks will be needed and is always good to have spares in you player's hockey bag. As part of our program U7 will receive Timbits jerseys and socks and U9 to 18 will have home and away team jersey for the season.
  • Hockey Stick / stick tape - Important tool for gameplay! Without skates on, experts recommend a stick touches underneath the nose but no lower than bottom of the chin when standing upright.
  • Jock / Jill - Provides essential protection and comes n an underlayer as part of a short or pant option.
  • Neck Guard (BCHA approved) - Designed to protect the neck and throat area from stray pucks, sticks, and skates.
  • Hockey Bag - Is just helpful to keep everything together.

Note: Goalie equipment is provided for the U7 and U9 divisions.
